Flagstone is a beautiful, natural stone and a popular choice for custom patios in Georgia. Not only is flagstone durable and weather-resistant, but it comes in a variety of colors, patterns and shapes to create an elegant touch to your outdoor space. Flagstone is a sedimentary rock made from a combination of sandstone and various minerals. Unlike slate, flagstone has a rough surface, which makes it ideal for patios and walkways – even those around pools and water features.
One of the highlighted benefits of choosing flagstone for your patio is the long-term return you’ll get on your investment. Flagstone can last for centuries with proper care! The even better news is that flagstone maintenance is relatively easy and simple.
At Garden Lights Landscaping, we suggest the following maintenance tips to keep your flagstone looking beautiful year after year:
- Remove Excess Water – While your flagstone can handle water exposure without crumbling or cracking, these rocks can discolor under excess water. If pools of water are allowed to linger, your flagstone will also be at risk for mold and mineral buildup.
- Sweep It on a Regular Basis – You certainly don’t have to clean off every leaf or piece of dirt that lands on flagstone patio, but a routine sweep can help you avoid discoloration and staining.
- Clean with a Stone Cleaner – Not all cleaners are good for natural stone. In fact, certain cleaning products can even damage your flagstone. If you have some stubborn blemishes on your flagstone patio that you’d like to remove, make sure you get a product that is designed specifically for natural stone. You may also consider outdoor bleach for spot stains on flagstone; this is NOT the same type of bleach you use on clothes or inside your home.
